Fatah: Gaza security forces prevent mass wedding

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Security forces in Gaza on Friday prevented a mass wedding sponsored by President Mahmoud Abbas from being held, a Fatah leader said.

Faisal Abu Shahla, a member of Fatah's revolutionary council, said 20 couples were due to marry in a joint ceremony on Friday evening.

"We were surprised the festival was prevented, the photos were torn, the audio devices were confiscated, barricades were set and guests were forbidden to enter by the security forces," Abu Shahla told Ma'an.

A police official in Gaza told Ma'an the ceremony had been approved but that permission was withdrawn after the organizers failed to comply with regulations that had been agreed.

Fatah spokesman Fayez Abu Aita said the party had arranged the mass ceremony to help young Palestinians who were struggling financially and could not afford a wedding.

"The wedding which Fatah intended to hold is just a social activity and has nothing to do with political disputes," Abu Aita said in a statement.

The Fatah movement in Gaza called on Hamas to prevent actions that harmed national reconciliation efforts.
