The Engineer is definitely one of the more difficult classes to play in Mann vs Machine. It is also one of the most necessary. The Engineer?s builds will often provide a system of support that players of other classes will be dependent on in the strategies.
One aspect of the Engineer that make him seem so complicated is having to juggle all of his abilities, as in knowing how and when to use them. In truth most of the Engineer?s abilities that are not builds are not really useful or needed here. Instead focus only on getting your turrets and dispenser in a good place. This is fairly easy, as you really only need to find a higher ground in the center of the map. This kind of location is useful for many reasons. With the dispenser it is nice to have it in an area like this so it is easily accessible to the rest of your team and yourself. With the turrets this area will give you a good view of the enemies path to you base from multiple angles. Because the turrets have a limited field of view you will often find that you?ll need to move it to allow it to get a better aim at the enemies. This is especially true when it comes to the tanks, as it is unlikely that the turret will be able to kill it while it is in front of it and you might want to move the turret so as to finish it off.
The down side to this center location is that the turrets range won?t reach the end of the level where the enemy robots first spawn. By the time the enemies are in range of your turret it is safe to assume that your teammates who where on the front lines are now dead. This means your turret could be overwhelmed and destroyed. This problem might tempt you into wanting to use one of your longer range weapons to do some initial damage. A skilled player of this class is free to try but I recommend focusing on maintaining your builds where you are. Instead this can be solved by buying the upgrade for a second mini-turret. Placing the mini-turret closer toward the enemy spawn will allow you to provide some assistance out in the front without any additional stress or worry.
Beyond simply healing your builds when injured there are a few other things the engineer has to worry about. The first are the Enemy Spys, but this is pretty easy as the there is an indication when a Spy spawns onto the field. Then you just have to keep an eye out for anyone coming to your builds and ?spy check? them with a swing of your wrench. If you do come into a conflict a Spy, they are pretty easy to fight and the turret will assist if their disguise is down. The second thing to watch out for is the sentry-busters. Honestly I haven?t found any regularly successful method of evading the sentry-busters with a sentry intact. If you pick up your turret then the sentry-buster will hunt you down. If you carry it into the base it will destroy your turret. The idea is to move the turret once the sentry-buster has crouched and started its time, but this is extremely difficult. The best strategy for dealing with these guys that I?ve found is to actually not worry about your builds being destroyed and to run away. You can always rebuild them again, and this is really easy if you buy the regenerative metal upgrade.
Overall the Engineer is a very helpful class in MvM. It can be pretty tough to pick up, but can be broken down into the needed attributes while still leaving plenty of area for learning new techniques.?Don?t forget to check out our other Mann vs Machine class guide:?The Scout,?the Soldier,?the Pyro, and the Heavy.
