JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION: Executive Director
ORGANIZATION: Asian Womens Shelter, San Francisco, California

Founded in 1988, Asian Womens Shelter (AWS) is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and promoting the social, economic and political self-determination of women. AWS is recognized as a local, regional and national leader in its field, providing comprehensive services in over 35 languages. AWS serves all survivors including women, children, youth and transgender people across the gender spectrum through two main programs:

The Direct Service component includes a 24-hour shelter program, Multilingual Access Model and Queer Asian Women and Transgender Support Program.

The Community Building component works to change values, practices, systems and policies through strategies such as grassroots mobilization, systems reform and inter-organizational and movement capacity building.

AWS upholds program areas with a strong organizational foundation comprised of dedicated Board of Directors (BD), staff, volunteers, on-call language advocates and community members. Further information about AWS can be viewed at: www.sfaws.org

BUDGET & STAFF: AWS operates with 17 staff members and an annual budget of $1.7 million. Approximately 80% of the budget is from government sources.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Executive Director is ultimately responsible for the overall management of AWS including: Setting and leading the strategic direction with strong BD and staff alignment; oversight and growth of agency budget; management of personnel; fundraising and advocacy; fiscal and legal oversight and compliance; oversight of program development, evaluation and refinement of services; public relations and networking; and board development. The main focus for the ED will be external fundraising, community-building and advocacy at the local, regional and national levels. The ED provides leadership that upholds the values and mission of AWS, while ensuring the sustainability of the organization.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: The Executive Director reports to the BD, and directly supervises an Associate Director, as well as other staff members involved in fundraising, advocacy and community building. The ED will hire the Associate Director (AD), who will oversee internal operations, including shelter programs, human resources and finance.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: AWS operates through consensus building and collaboration among staff. This is core to the organizations value of ending the abuse of power through an anti-oppression framework. This shared leadership approach and structure has been in place since its inception and is an integral component of the culture at the AWS. The ED is expected to communicate clear expectations while supporting and encouraging teamwork and collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Specifically, the AWS Executive Director:

Provides leadership to the agency by modeling and upholding AWS mission and values.

Takes overall responsibility for the AWS program and site by safeguarding the confidentiality and safety of clients, shelter facility and location; and by ensuring excellent program planning, development and evaluation by and with staff.

Ensures the highest quality of service and the attainment of established programmatic goals and priorities through team building, collegial management, and collaborative decision-making.

With staff, plans, leads and helps execute AWS fundraising efforts, including contributing to the submission of grant proposals, as well as orchestrating fundraising events and donor campaigns.

In collaboration with the BD and staff, cultivates relationships with funders and prospective donors and has major responsibility for helping to enhance revenue streams.

Develops the annual agency budget and ensures proper fiscal accounting and controls in accordance with the guidelines of funding sources and with sound accounting practices. Maintains fiscal solvency of agency.

Working collaboratively with staff and relevant volunteers, oversees program development, execution of programs, grant compliance and reporting. Ultimately is responsible for AWSprograms.

Leads long-range planning and visioning, including assessment of programs in partnership with the BD and staff. Ensures that the AWS strategic plan is fulfilled and updated as necessary.

Works closely with the AD to develop programmatic work, and to ensure all financial, human resources and operational systems are running smoothly and are in compliance.

Maintains collegial relationships with other domestic violence programs and agencies; represents the agency in coalitions and collaborative projects; and advocates on behalf of AWSs constituencies in public arenas and in collaboration with local, state and national advocacy groups.

Engages and encourages a strong, active BD that assists AWS in fulfilling its mission. Ensures that the BD is actively involved in governance, planning, fundraising and outreach activities that help build relationships for AWS.

Along with staff and BD, serves as an agency spokesperson and acts as a liaison with other public sector agencies, foundations, partners and businesses. Actively engaged in public relations and media communications. Provides strategic oversight in all marketing and communications.

Ensures that the personnel policies of AWS are adhered to in all hiring and employment practices. With the AD and relevant staff, provide staff development activities that upgrade employee skills and motivate performance.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND:

-Demonstrated passion for and commitment to: domestic violence issues, work with immigrant or other marginalized populations, womens issues, LGBTQ issues, social justice, social service or related work. Tell us about this in your cover letter.

-Minimum of 8 years experience in non-profit management as an executive director, senior manager or equivalent, including a working knowledge of the laws governing charitable organizations.

-Knowledge of domestic violence, womens, LGBTQ, social justice and immigrant issues. Ability to network and speak about these issues to a wide range of stakeholders. Skilled in cultural awareness and adept at navigating complex cultural dynamics.

-Acumen with staff supervision, personnel and human resources, budgeting and financial management. Experience working with Boards of Directors.

-Commitment to and understanding of consensus building and collaborative decision-making processes. Proven ability to build and maintain highly-motivated and diverse staff teams. Visionary yet grounded.

-Substantial record of successful fundraising from public and private sources to support nonprofit agency programs.

-Exemplary communication skills including public speaking and writing, and an ability to network with community partners, government representatives, business executives, foundation officials, donors and the media.

-Possess integrity, a strong work ethic and strong commitment to upholding the AWS mission, values, philosophy and practice in the areas of anti-oppression, anti-homophobia and non-violence.

-A degree in a related field or commensurate experience.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND:

-Experience with advocacy that addresses violence against women.

-Experience working in diverse communities, including Asian communities, immigrant and refugee communities, LGBTQ communities, etc.

-Self-awareness, ability to set healthy boundaries, self-reflection, strong communication skills and conflict-resolution.

-Residential and/or crisis management program experience.

COMPENSATION: The compensation package is competitive. Final salary offered will be based on the candidate meeting job qualifications and commensurate relevant experience. Comprehensive benefits package. Annual salary range: $85,000 $110,000.
