Santorum suggests abortion causes breast cancer | The Raw Story

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday suggested that Susan G. Komen for the Cure shouldn?t provide grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings because abortions cause breast cancer, a false claim that has been repeatedly debunked.
The candidate told Fox News host Chris Wallace that he didn?t agree with the Komen Foundation reversing itself last week and making Planned Parenthood eligible for future grants.
?I?ve taken the position as a presidential candidate and someone in Congress that Planned Parenthood funds and does abortions,? Santorum explained. ?They?re a private organization they stand up and support what ever they want.?
?I don?t believe that breast cancer research is advanced by funding an organization where you?ve seen ties to cancer and abortion,? he added. ?So, I don?t think it?s a particularly healthy way of contributing money to further cause of breast cancer, but that?s for a private organization like Susan B. Komen to make that decision.?
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the several small flawed studies that suggested a link between abortion and breast cancer have been disproven.
?Since then, better-designed studies have been conducted,? the institute?s website said. ?These newer studies examined large numbers of women, collected data before breast cancer was found, and gathered medical history information from medical records rather than simply from self-reports, thereby generating more reliable findings. The newer studies consistently showed no association between induced and spontaneous abortions and breast cancer risk.?
In 2002, the Bush administration temporarily altered NCI?s website to say that scientific evidence supported a possible link between abortion and breast cancer. After an outcry from the scientific community, NCI corrected its website with an accurate fact sheet.
A study released by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) in 2006 found that the Bush administration also used pregnancy resource centers ? commonly known as ?crisis pregnancy centers? ? to falsely inform pregnant teens that the risk of breast cancer increased by 80 percent after an abortion.
?This tactic may be effective in frightening pregnant teenagers and women and discouraging abortion,? the study concluded (PDF). ?But it denies the teenagers and women vital health information, prevents them from making an informed decision, and is not an accepted public health practice.?

Intelligent men and women sometimes make silly mistakes in terms of investing. Part of the reason for this, I guess, is the fact that a lot of people don?t have the time to learn what they need to know to make excellent decisions.
Do not Forget to Diversify
The average stock market return is 10 percent or so, but to earn 10 percent you need to own a broad range of stocks. In other words, you have to diversify.
To make money on the stock market, you need around 15 to 20 stocks in a variety of industries. (I didn?t just make up these figures; the 15 to 20 range comes from a statistical calculation that many upper-division and graduate finance textbooks explain.)
Have Patience
It?s important for investors to have patience. There are going to be many bad years. Many times, one awful year is followed by another bad year. But over time, the great years outnumber the bad.
They compensate for the awful years too. Patient investors who stay in the market in both the good and bad years virtually always do better than people who try to follow every single fad or invest in last year?s hot stock.
Invest Regularly
You might already know about dollar-average investing. Instead of purchasing a set number of stocks at regular intervals, you buy a regular dollar amount, such as $100. If the share price is $10, you buy ten shares. If the share price is $20, you purchase five shares. If the share price is $5, you purchase twenty shares.
To make dollar-average investing work with individual stocks, you need to dollar-average every single stock. In other words, if you?re buying stock in IBM, you have to invest in a set dollar amount of IBM stock each and every month, every quarter, or whatever.
Don?t Ignore Investment Expenses
Investment expenses can add up quickly. Small differences in expense ratios, costly investment newsletter subscriptions, online financial services (including Quicken Quotes!), and income taxes can easily subtract hundreds of thousands of dollars from your net worth over a lifetime of investing.
Investment expenses may add up to really big numbers when you realize that you could have invested the funds and earned interest and dividends for years.
Don?t Get Greedy
Folks make all sorts of foolish investment choices when they get greedy and pursue returns that are out of line using the average annual returns of the stock market.
If an individual tells you that he has a sure-thing investment or investment strategy that pays, say, 15 percent, do not believe it. And, for Pete?s sake, do not buy investments on a shell company or investment advice from that individual.
Do Not Get Fancy
For years now, I?ve made the better part of my living by analyzing complex investments. Nevertheless, I believe that it makes most sense for investors to stick with simple investments: mutual funds, individual stocks and shares, government and corporate bonds, and so on.

As with NMA's one-minute summary "The Social Network," the tale of Zuckerberg's stalker?and Zuck's ethics n' eatin' project, the Facebook?CEO?is cartoonified as a little boy in a mustard-yellow hoodie and baggie shorts. Here we?see Zuck in business mode, slaughtering a bull, beating up?Ronald McDonald and auctioning off one unfortunate Facebook user to Facebook advertisers.
So is Facebook worth a $100 billion market cap that would make it one of the most valuable companies in the world? Given the investors falling to their animated, bloody deaths at the end of this particular cartoon, NMA doesn't seem to think so.

Men and women experience desire differently. Both genders can lose sexual desire over time, but it seems that women can often fall off the deep end of desire later in life. What?s to blame?nutrition? Lackluster male lovers? Or something else?

New research is demonstrating what many people already knew from experience: Women lose interest in sex over time, while men don?t.
The finding has the potential to help couples, the researchers said. Knowing that many women?s sexual desire diminishes over the course of a relationship could encourage both partners to be more realistic about their sex lives, and could help them weather the changes in desire as they occur.
Sex researchers Sarah Murray and Robin Milhausen, both of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, asked 170 undergraduate women and men who had been in heterosexual relationships for anywhere from one month to nine years to report on their levels of relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and sexual desire. Desire was scored using an established model called the Female Sexual Function Index, which ranges from 1.2 to 6.0.
The participants reported being generally satisfied with their relationships and sex lives, but women reported lower levels of desire depending on the length of their relationship. ?Specifically, for each additional month women in this study were in a relationship with their partner, their sexual desire decreased by 0.02 on the Female Sexual Function Index,? the authors wrote online Jan. 23 in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy.
In fact, relationship duration was a better predictor of sexual desire in women than both relationship and sexual satisfaction. While the 0.02 decrease in female desire was small, it contrasts with male desire, which held steady over time, the researchers said.

The Truth About the Future of Marriage | Relate ... - Relationships Work

Will marriage become a thing of the past?
Some frightening statistics were recently reported by the Pew Research Center. They found the rate of marriage in the United States is at an all-time low; only 50% of all adults (ages 18+) are currently married, compared to 72% in 1960.
Though 40% of people believe marriage is becoming obsolete, 61% of those ?never married? want to get married someday.
Better news was reported by the National Marriage Project, a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, and interdisciplinary initiative at the University of Virginia, founded to do research on the state of marriage. Their recent study shows greater than 75% of people in the US still believe marriage is ?important.? In addition, they found 70% of adults under age 30 want to marry someday.
So what does this mean for the future of marriage?
From a historical perspective these statistics sense. In the 1950s and 1960s marriage was necessary for economic and social purposes. There were few choices for women in the workplace and men did not stay home to raise kids. Couples were committed to staying married. The foundation upon which marriages are built today is quite different than our parents?.
Today, women and men have the opportunity to lead individually fulfilling lives, have careers and live singly, with or without children. Socially, an unmarried or divorced person is not judged to be deviant as they would have been years ago.
Despite this, we do believe that marriage will continue. Most people we see are looking for a person with whom they can connect, emotionally and sexually; a companion they can spend the rest of their lives with. Most people who want children do not want to raise them alone.
The problem is we marry for one reason only: feelings of love; feelings so powerful we believe they will hold us together forever. The truth is, love is the weakest link in a relationship. Without understanding the commitment to ?marriage,? and without compatible qualities in partners, love is the worst reason in the world to marry. Feelings will fade without the proper care and feeding.
Individuals and couples, more than ever, need to learn how to create a thriving and lasting marriage. More than any prior generation, we must acquire the skills that lead to successful and enduring partnerships and have more conscious conversations than ever before.
There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.

Mexican general, 29 soldiers on trial for homicide (AP)
MEXICO CITY ? A Mexican army general and 29 soldiers under his command in a town on the border with Texas are being tried on charges of torture, homicide, drug trafficking and other crimes, a top government official confirmed Tuesday.
Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire said that the crimes charged in the case are "deplorable and reprehensible" and that the troops are being tried in a military court.
Details about Gen. Manuel Moreno Avina and his subordinates' alleged reign of terror in the town of Ojinaga, across from Presidio, Texas, were first reported by the newspaper Reforma, which had access to some of the soldiers' testimony.
Shortly after Moreno arrived in Ojinaga in spring 2008, the troops under his command began kidnapping, torturing and killing suspects and stealing cars, computers, TV sets and even mattresses during raids on suspects' homes, according to the testimony reported by Reforma. They allegedly resold the stolen items as well as marijuana and cocaine they seized.
Poire did not confirm the allegations contained in Reforma's story, and the Defense Department didn't respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
According to the newspaper, prosecutors say at least 10 civilians were killed by soldiers or by hit men under the orders of Moreno in 2008 and 2009.
At least three of those slain were described as suspects in the custody of soldiers, including a man in his 20s who was detained in July 2008 and taken to the military garrison and given electroshocks until he died of a heart attack. His body allegedly was taken to a ranch, soaked in diesel and burned.
Seven other people were killed on the orders of Moreno by two hit men working for La Linea, a gang of assassins and corrupt police officers who act as enforcers for the Juarez Cartel, according to the testimony reported by Reforma.
Among the alleged victims were a secretary at the federal prosecutors' office in Ojinaga, a state police officer, a local police officer who stopped Moreno for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, and a businessman who filed a complaint with federal prosecutors and human rights officials after soldiers raided his house and stole money.
Soldiers also reportedly testified that Moreno often kept cars seized in legal and illegal raids and had them painted in military green.
Poire said the general and other soldiers are being tried in a military court in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa and are all being held at a military prison in the state of Jalisco, it said.
Military investigators were first alerted to the soldiers' crimes in August 2009 by an anonymous complaint that they were collaborating with a criminal group, Defense Department officials told Reforma.
President Felipe Calderon deployed 50,000 soldiers and other military personnel to fight organized crime shortly after taking office in December 2006. More than 47,000 people have been killed in drug violence since Calderon launched his offensive, according to government figures.
The Inter-American Court on Human Rights and Mexico's own Supreme Court have ruled that soldiers who commit human rights violations against civilians should be tried in civilian courts. Calderon has said his government will comply with rulings, but so far it has not made the transition or agreed to give civilian courts military cases of murder.
A Human Rights Watch report on Mexico released in November said only 15 soldiers had been convicted following 3,671 investigations by military prosecutors into alleged human rights violations by soldiers against civilians from 2007 to June 2011. No soldier or state official had been convicted in any of more than 200 cases that the New York-based rights group documented in the report.
